Vitamins for eye care
Vitamins with some evidence of benefit for eye care include:
- Bilberry
- Lutein
- Selenium
- Vitamin A
Bilberry
Bilberry helps to maintain the healthy function of the retina and serves as an antioxidant to help reduce cell damage caused by free radicals. It is said to help sooth sore eyes caused by visual fatigue and helps the eyes adjust to glare or darkness.
The recommended daily dosage of Bilberry is 5-10g per day.
Lutein
Lutein is a Carotenoid that is found in the eye and is concentrated in the macular area of the retina. Lutein helps to form a layer of pigment in the macular that helps to filter damaging light before it reaches the retina. It is also an antioxidant that may help reduce the risk of age-related macular damage caused by free radicals.
The recommended daily dosage of Lutein is 6mg.
Selenium
Selenium is an antioxidant that helps reduce cell damage in the eyes caused by free radicals.
The recommended daily dosage of Selenium is 26mcg.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is essential for vision and in particular, night vision. When attached to a certain protein, the retinyl group (found in Vitamin A) is the only primary light absorber in visual perception
The recommended daily dosage of Vitamin A is 2,500iu.
